At the time of Lewis and Clark, this site was the principal center of commerce in the Columbia River Basin.

...the nativs inform us the ships anchor, and from whence they receive their goods in return for their peltries and Elk skins...

Trading ships arrived so frequently that many Chinook could speak and understand English words. The Chinooks were so familiar with these ship captains, they gave Lewis and Clark a list of their names.
