Here, near Orofino, Idaho along the Clearwater River the ill and hungry men after crossing the Rockies hewed and burned out the "Holler" of the five canoes which were to carry them on to the Pacific.

They stayed at Canoe Camp until October 7, then, leaving their horses to be wintered with the friendly Nez Perce Indians they started their river journey.
