On July 30, 1805 the Corps of Discovery left the Three Forks of the Missouri. Their goal was to find the Shoshones, get horses and learn where to cross the Rocky Mountains.
Charles M Russell depicted Lewis meeting the Shoshone on August 13.

Both parties now rested along the Beaverhead River at a place that would become known as Camp Fortunate.
