A Great Show

June 25, 2008 — Karaginskiy Island, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia

A beautiful hot sunny day we met local villagers at Ossora coastline town. Dressed in handsome traditional Koryak garb, made of reindeer skin, trimmed in embroidery, fur, and elaborate beadwork, we enjoyed a dance performance following a traditional cleansing ceremony. There was lots of variety and we got the opportunity to view and buy traditional Koryak wares. Afterwards we encountered many students with their teachers wanting to practice their English.

We made a trip past the World War II - 1941-45 and Lenin monuments. (It appears like in the last town the posters of the communism days have been eradicated.) We also passed the school and general store on the way to the museum which appeared to be behind a government building. It was a great crowd but it was soon time to say good-bye.

After lunch Jonathan Rossouw gave a lecture Sea Monsters: Cetaceans of the Bering Sea and after an early supper we explored the tundra and flower-covered Verkhorturova Island. While being observed by a Red Fox we gradually made our way up to the ridge where we could see the other side. Coming down, it was 10.30 as the sun began to set. It was an amazing evening. On returning to sea level Conrad, showed us male & female walrus skulls along with a Steller Sea Lion skull he had found.
