The Beauty of it All

June 14, 2008 — Broutona Island / Chirpoy Island / Brat Chirpoy, Kuril Islands, Russia

We took several Zodiac excursions today, visiting a series of small islands punctuated with caves and coves and populated with profuse wildlife and birds. Western Broutona is home to vast colonies of northern fulmars — nearly a million nest here — black-legged kitti-wakes, puffins, cormorants, and guillemots.

After lunch Chirpoy offered hiking against a backdrop of three smoking volcanoes which were fogged in. Joan followed the birders while I linked up with the botanist. We had another bird anatomy lesson then returned along the seashore containing much flotsam & jetsam.

In the evening we visited Brat Chirpoy which contains a Steller’s sea lion rookery. The sound was eerie as we approached,
