On Pinto, the depredations of sailors, fishermen and collectors may have caused the extinction of the race. Only a single male, Lonesome George, is known to be alive.

A reward of $10,000 has been offered for a true Pinta female but there is now little hope of finding one in zoos.

In 1981 a tortoise dropping was discovered on Pinta which indicated there might just be another individual on the island itself.
