Like many other lizards, the Galapagos species can lose their tails to escape when attacked. Although they can regenerate them, they rarely regain their original length.

Is it possible this fellow has lost his more than once?
Even members of the same species living in different habitats show color differences.

Those living mainly on dark lava are darker than ones which live in lighter sandy places.
Their vision is most sensitive to red and yellow and this is perhaps why the females have bright red throats during breeding times.
