Curare causes motor paralysis when introduced into the bloodstream and today is used in medicine to relax muscles, as during surgery.

I was particulary interested in this plant as Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada is named after the famous English natural scientist who wrote that one of the aims of his journey to South America in 1812 was to collect curare for his experiments.
