THEORY. POLITICS. DECISION-MAKING.

Welcome to the Department of Political Science

Political Science is the systematic study of government, politics and political behaviour.

Political Science is the systematic study of government, politics and political behaviour, in a rapidly changing world. It studies how a society governs itself at all levels and various ideas about how it should be governed in the future. Government is a core component of power and policy structures - it authors how a society organizes itself for collective action. Political structures and governments are in constant flux and that makes this a very exciting major to choose. Politics is a central component of our culture and daily it grows more complicated due to globalization issues and world events.

Department Highlights

Dr. Jodi Bruhn – POLI 3850A (W2025): Dissidence and Totalitarian Rule

Dr. Jodi BRUHN will be teaching POLI 3850A (Dissidence and Totalitarian Rule) on Tuesdays/Thursdays 12:00 - 1:15 p.m.

This course will explore dissidence as a potential response to the impositions of totalitarian rule. We will consider key characteristics of totalitarianism as presented by selected political theorists, placing dissidence within the universe of other possible responses to it. We will then analyze selected writings of dissidents in three totalitarian contexts (National Socialist Germany, Communist Czechoslovakia, the Islamic Republic of Iran). The course will conclude by considering potential applications of these dissidents’ insights and experiences to political life in modern liberal democracies.

Xavier Crosby - Winner of the 2022 Mahon Family Sport Award

In 2022, I had the honor of being chosen as a recipient of the Mahon Family Sport award along with 8 other incredible Pronghorn athletes. Receiving this award meant the world to me. Excellence in sport is something that we all aspire to achieve, but recognition for the things that we do beyond our events, recognition for our hard work in the classroom, our volunteer efforts, and our involvement in the community is the type of achievement that I believe all Pronghorns strive for. Receiving the Mahon Family Sport Award was also deeply moving. To know that the President of our university believed so strongly in what we were striving to achieve as Pronghorns that he and his family would offer financial support is a feeling of belonging and support that very few student athletes will ever have the chance to feel.
