Dr. Islay Arnold, O.C. (1979-1983)
Islay Arnold's dedication to community service has earned her recognition on both the local and national level. Born in Ceylon, Saskatchewan, Arnold attended post-secondary school in Regina and the Unviersity of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. She married Dr. Hugh ARnold in 1938 and settled in Lethbridge, where she taught school for many years. Arnold was an early supporter for the establishment of the University of Lethbridge and her support has continued throughout the University's existance. She was appointed to the UofL Senate in 1976 and elected as the University's fourth Chancellor in 1979. During her 11 years on Senate, she has served as Chairman of a host of Senate committees as well as representing Senate on the Board of Governors. Arnold's active participation in numerous community groups and national organizations led to her appointment as officer of the Order of Canada in 1986. She was also recently awarded the Lady Ishbelk-Aberdeen Award in recognition of her work with the Victorian Order of Nurses. Arnold has served with the VON | |
since 1972, first as PResident of the Lethbridge Branch, then as President for the Province of Alberta and finally as the national Vice-President, President and member of the board of directors. Arnold is founder and continuing member of the Alberta Nursing Reserach Foundation. She has been a member of the Council of the Alberta Order of Excellence since 1983 and was appointed to the review committee for Health and Welfare Canada's voluntary granting organization in 1985. Some of her past involvements include work with the Lethbridge Home Care committee, Meals on Wheels, Lethbridge Music club, the Christian Education Committee of the First Baptist Church, United Way Agencies Committee and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery. She is a past president and life member of the Lethbridge Kinette Club, a women's service organization. In 1974, she was honored by the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs with a special tribute for "Outstanding Contributions to the Community". The Lethbridge YWCA presented her with the "Women of Distinction Award" in 1984. | Image
