The Impact of Digitalization on Sex Abuse Victims — Professor W. Warren H. Binford
Monday, Nov. 30, 3 to 4:30 p.m., TH 241, Turcotte Hall
Binford, director of Willamette University College’s Clinical Law Program in Oregon, has been conducting research at the University of Calgary this semester as the Fulbright Canada-Palix Foundation’s Distinguished Visiting Research Chair in Child and Family Health and Wellness. She’ll talk about her research on the need to modernize legal protections to better support child sex abuse victims in an era where recordings of their abuse can spread globally and be permanent.

Music at Noon Series — Dr. Andrew Stewart, Karlax
Tuesday, Dec.1, 12:15 to 1 p.m., W570, Recital Hall
Stewart will talk about the future of lutherie, or the making of musical instruments, in the 21st century, and perform new music for the Karlax. The Karlax is a recent electronic instrument designed to make the artist’s body the heart of the performance.

In celebration of United Nations International Volunteer Day, this event is aimed at recognizing student and community volunteers and includes performances by Global Drums, Vocal Harmony Singers, U of L Brass Quintet and a Native American Students Association dance ensemble. Booths and craft tables are also part of the display.

ART NOW — Sarah Anne Johnson
Friday, Dec. 4, noon to 12:50 p.m., W570, Recital Hall
Johnson’s latest exhibit at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery reflects on the trauma sustained as a result of CIA experiments in mind control from 1950 to 1973. Canadian and American citizens experienced paralytic and psychedelic drugs, electroconvulsive therapy, isolation, sensory deprivation, drug-induced comas, and verbal and sexual abuse. Johnson’s grandmother sought treatment for postpartum depression and became an unwilling and unwitting participant in the experiments.
