Spring Job Fair

Wednesday, Feb. 6, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., 1st Choice Savings Centre

The job fair gives U of L students the chance to connect with employers from sectors such as health, finance, agriculture, government and everything in between.

Student Speaker Challenge

Wednesday, Feb. 6, noon and Wednesday, Feb. 13, noon, Ballrooms, Students’ Union Building

This year’s topic centres on the importance of sports. Contestants will have eight minutes each to talk about sports from a local point of view on Feb. 6 and, on Feb. 13, to talk about sports from an international point of view. The challenge is being sponsored by the Campus Women’s Centre, SACPA and the ULSU. Cash prizes are available to the winners.

Winter Walk Day is celebrated across Alberta and this year’s winter walk will take participants around Aperture Lake.

The Physics of Thin Air: Tracking the Aurora and Related Weather Phenomena in Space

Thursday, Feb. 7, 1:40 to 2:55 p.m., D632, University Hall

Dr. Andrew Yau from the University of Calgary will talk about why comets have a long tail and whether the Earth is gaining or losing weight. Yau will discuss the law of gravity and Gauss’s law of magnetism to examine if space is indeed empty, how the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetic field respond to the sun’s electromagnetic and particle radiation, and how space weather affects technology on Earth.

Take Two Speaker Series — Researching Wellness

Thursday, Feb. 7, 3:30 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place

Drs. Jennifer Copeland, kinesiology, and Roy Golsteyn, biology, both research wellness but from very different perspectives. Copeland will talk about her research looking at health and wellness across the lifespan. She’ll discuss evidence that shows physical activity, in addition to being associated with a lower risk of chronic conditions, also influences non-disease outcomes such as functional capacity, mobility, cognitive function and quality of life. Golsteyn will discuss the potential of Alberta’s wildflowers to become the medicines of the future. The U of L’s Prairie to Pharmacy program is where scientific and Indigenous knowledge is shared while investigating the chemicals in these plants.

Barb Stegemann — Business for Good

Thursday, Feb. 7, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge

Barb Stegemann, CEO and founder of The 7 Virtues, was the first woman from Atlantic Canada to land a deal on Dragons’ Den. She formed her entrepreneurial vision after her best friend, a soldier, was severely wounded in Afghanistan. Wanting to support the Afghan economy to help build stability for its people, she created a company that sources organic, fair trade essential oils from countries experiencing turmoil to use in making perfumes.

U of L Opera Workshop — Candide

Friday, Feb. 8 to Sat. Feb. 9, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Southminster United Church

Everyone is invited to attend this operetta, produced in collaboration with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. Comedy and tragedy combine in this hilarious farce written by Leonard Bernstein, the man behind West Side Story.
