Biography
Dr. Hamid Akbary has joined the Department of Sociology at the University of Lethbridge as an Assistant Professor. He grew up in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he completed his undergraduate studies at Kabul University in 2010. He worked for local and international organizations in Afghanistan, including the United Nations, and he was involved in several largescale projects that promoted gender and ethnic equality across the country. Dr. Akbary received a Fulbright Scholarship from the U.S. government in 2013 to pursue a master's degree in sociology at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. He completed his master's studies in 2015 and moved to Canada shortly after to complete a doctoral degree in sociology at the University of Calgary. His doctoral research was awarded a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, which he completed in 2022. Prior to joining the University of Lethbridge, he was affiliated with the University of Calgary as a postdoctoral fellow and sessional instructor. He also worked as an analyst for Statistics Canada, government of Canada.
Dr. Akbary's research lies at the intersection of gender and migration, and he uses a range of qualitative and quantitative methods in his research. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and he is currently working on a book manuscript on the lives of Afghan Muslims in Canada.
